G. Sanford McGee

The copper art of Sewanee artist G. Sanford McGee is featured in homes far beyond the plateau. The plateau, however, is an integral part of Sanford’s work, each of which captures native plants “like a fossil,” he says. To etch the plant life onto the copper, Sanford strategically applies acid washes that slowly etch the patterns onto the metal. The piece itself is then left outside, exposed to the elements to encourage a patina to slowly form. The result gives life to botanical silhouettes in colors that include blues, purples, yellows, and reds.

Sanford is a founding member of the South Cumberland Regional Land Trust. His dedication to both conservation and art helps preserve the mountain's beauty for generations to come.
